Ancient Literature / History / Art Cycle (With Some Chemistry on the Side)

Just a little light reading on the schedule this month:
The Epic of Gilgamesh, The Code of Hammurabi, and Till We Have Faces.
The kids have also virtually explored the Caves of Lascaux, the Gate of Ishtar, and the mysteries of Stonehenge.
In Art co-op we have designed our own cave painting shoe boxes,

crafted low relief sculptures with recycled styrofoam,

and molded animals out of terra cotta clay.

While the high school kids separated the H2 fro the O in Dr. Marsha's Lab,

the elementary school students grew borax crystals on my window sill.

I am really proud of the work the kids have been doing. They are also enjoying the beautiful fall weather and fun Fridays playing football on the lawn. Life is good, and I am thankful for the gift of home education- which allows me to enjoy every moment of it with them.

Waldorf What?

When the link to Homeschooling on a Shoestring was published , there was some discussion about the overview of teaching styles. A friend of mine, who happens to be a very talented artist, was curious about the Waldorf Style. We hadn't heard of it before, at least not under this label. According to the post, it is a teaching style that integrates head, heart and hands. It involves art, faith and lots of hands on activities. While there are many elements of Waldorf philosophy that are not compatible with our Classically Catholic teaching style, we have occasionally borrowed ideas to make our curriculum more colorful and whimsical. It's A Boy!

And another boy! Double the blessing, and born on a special feast day as well! They look and sound more like the Sons of Thunder than Saints Peter and Paul- but the official names are Christopher Jax and Michael Gage. The proud parents are looking pretty good themselves, but I promised not to post their pics until they've had a good nights' sleep. Behold the Handiwork of God!

Reason # 5,078 to Homeschool

So your college aged student can handle her Sophist - icated professor. Dear Daughter is taking honors English at the local university and surprise- they are studying Greek Lit. Suppose you are the college professor tasked with instructing students who actually want to study Odysseus, Sophocles and the philosophers of ancient Greece. What will be the emphasis? Perhaps an analysis of historical, oratorical and philosophical prose? Or shall they compare / contrast the dialects of the Ionians , Aeolians, and Dorians ? Maybe they will contest the existence of the material world. No, no, no, my dear. The focal point of all discussion will be love. But not just any love.
