Late Nights and Long Summer Days

I knew I shouldn't have let the kids stay up so late last night. They've been walking around like Zombies all day. But no worries, I've been assured that the Zombie Apocalypse will be over by Monday evening thanks to " Hunter" and " Casings" , Zombie slayers . The make-up crew arrived early to begin the transformations- then voted unanimously to strike "a.m." from future schedules. I was relieved that the cast was satisfied with stacks of pancakes and pizza because we are fresh out of.... BRAINS! Summer antics have begun! Eutrapelia ?  Not yet. But we are working on it.

Ship Shape Field Trip

After two days of watching God water the lawn and garden, we needed to get out of the house (before the bouncy boys were grounded for life). Fortunately, it was Navy Week and the City of New Orleans hosted the event with the usual southern panache.  I called my Mom to see if she wanted to join her grand kids on an impromptu field trip to the city. KT agreed to join us so we met at her house in Mid-City. We splurged on day passes for the streetcar so we could listen to grandma reminisce about 7 cent fares and the days when it was safe for a young girl to travel the city streets alone. What would a couple of rough and tumble boys enjoy more than to tour the tall ships,  and handle some 1812 replica weaponry? (I don't think it was only the boys who enjoyed it...)  There were displays to enjoy while waiting in line for the tours  And a good bit of history to learn along the way.  All aboard! ...

Thing One and Thing Two

Lessons from   Dr. Seuss: "The sun did not shine.  It was too wet to play.  So we sat in the house  All that cold, cold,   wet day." Well, almost all day. Once the thunder quieted and lightning flashed its last, Thing One and Thing Two knew just what to do. They donned swim trunks, grabbed the skim boards, and sloshed through the sea that used to be our yard.  They were even able to convince Teen Thing to join them for some brotherly bonding. It's no wonder the grass doesn't grow back there any more! Homeschool PE: Unique as a boy's imagination! I don't think they will even notice that baseball practice was cancelled today. I, on the other hand, lounged on the sofa like a sluggard; eating pasta, potatoes, and other such fattening comfort foods.  It has been two days of nonstop thunderstorms and my newly planted garden is drowning. One more day until the sun is scheduled to shine. This solar powered mom is ...

It's All Greek To Me

Stiff and stoic archaic period sculptures ; graceful classical period  reliefs;   St. Paul's journeys  through Corinth, Ephesus, and Rhodes;  mythology retold for young audiences - What a whirlwind tour of Greece we've had these past few weeks!   We've sketched battle helmets, painted Hoplite shields, and designed theatrical masks. Isn't Medusa terrifying???? The boys even built a Trojan Horse out of cardboard.  Well, it actually turned into a Star Wars AT-AT, but they promised to deliver a Trojan Horse before the Art Exhibit next week.  Did I mention the Art Exhibit? It will be held immediately after the Science Fair on Friday the 17th. Ooops! I don't think I mentioned the Science Fair either. Parents, grandparents, and friends of the family are welcome to join us for an open house as we showcase the kids' hard work. Refreshments will be provided  ;)   I am so excited for this  last hurr...

Paint Like An Egyptian

Walk  Paint like an Egyptian, using a few tips from this site .  Or you could mummify a cat- sort of..... Aren't they regal? If a cat isn't your style, try your little brother or sister. ... At least until they cry, "I want my mummy!" After a full day of art projects you can always Eat like an Egyptian .  For Today's Lunch. ...   Try a stew made of barley, red wheat, and brown rice; all grains typically farmed in Egypt. Thanks, Kimberly, for providing another yummy meal for our hungry students. I know Joseph probably did not store up carrots or turkeys for sausage, but it did add a nice flavor to the grain, and we are quite fond of our Jambalaya in the deep south ;) Whew! I'm stuffed.
